O’ Canada!
08.31.2009From Kristen

Welcome to our northern neighbors from Canada! (Especially to George Metzler for breaking the border and joining our efforts!). Not only have we started seeing some love from our Canadian photographers, but we also got some great news from The Breast Cancer Research Foundation about how they support research and education there! I wanted to share, so hopefully we can get some more great neighbors to work with us!

The Foundation proudly supports the research work of Pamela Goodwin, MD, MSC, FRCPC at Mount Sinai Hospital at the University of Toronto.  I have included below a short paragraph on Dr. Goodwin’s current research work funded by BCRF.  We do not have an administrative chapter in Canada.  We only have one office—in New York City.  This is one of the ways we are able to keep our administrative costs so low, thereby ensuring that the majority of each donation goes to research.  A mini summary of Dr Goodwin is as follows;

Pamela J. Goodwin, MD, MSc, FRCPC – Mount Sinai Hospital, University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Dr. Goodwin and colleagues are currently working on two studies with BCRF funding. The first, Survivorship in a Long-Term Breast Cancer Cohort, has been ongoing for three years.  The researchers have completed data collection for both breast cancer survivors and healthy controls, and they are currently analyzing theirdata. Because of the complex nature of the dataset, it is anticipated that this analysis will continue for at least another year. The second study is an observational study of Vitamin D in Breast Cancer in both Toronto and Los Angeles (in collaboration with Dr. Patricia Ganz). The investigators are determining the extent to which vitamin D deficiency is present in both groups of breast cancer patients, whether it is related to treatment with aromatase inhibitors (hormones commonly used to lower the risk of breast cancer recurrence) and whether a randomized trial of vitamin D supplementation in breast cancer patients is feasible. They have done all of the preliminary work to conduct this study at both centers and are currently recruiting women onto the trial – they anticipate data collection will continue to the end of 2009, with analysis in early 2010.

A commonly used diabetes drug, metformin, may be beneficial in treating breast cancer. In the coming year, Dr. Goodwin plans to study the effect of this drug on proliferation of breast cancer cells, and on biologic processes within cancer cells, in 40 women with inoperable breast cancer. The ultimate goal is to improve outcomes of women with breast cancer.”

To all the supporters of “Images for a Cure”:

The Breast Cancer Research Foundation is honored to be the beneficiary charity for the “Images for a Cure” fundraiser, taking place on October 11, 2009.

It is with the support and passion of people like you and events such as these, that BCRF is able to support the research projects of 166 pioneering scientists worldwide. Our grantees are making exciting progress in the fight  against breast cancer. Their breakthrough accomplishments include the development of new drugs and treatment methods; the discovery of genetic markers for breast cancer; the detection of fundamental properties of breast cancer “stem” cells, or tumor-origination cells; the inception and completion of national and international breast cancer clinical trials; and the discovery of links between breast cancer risk and lifestyle factors, such as diet and exercise. These important achievements are only possible through the commitment of donors like you.

BCRF is committed to ensuring that at least 85% of each dollar donated goes directly towards supporting these important research and awareness programs. Accordingly, the vast majority of the money raised through “Images for a Cure” will go where it is most needed—research. You are all an inspiration for your dedication to our cause.

Best wishes with this fantastic event!

Yours Sincerely,

Lucretia Gilbert
Co-Director, Special Events
Associate Director, Development

Why did you want to get involved with Images for a Cure?
I heard about Images for a Cure through another participating photographer and immediately wanted to jump onboard. Bearing the statistic of being the second most common cause of cancer death in women of most races, breast cancer impacts hundreds of thousands of women, plus their families and friends, every year. I spend a lot volunteer time photographing events, but have never participated in such a compassionate endeavor that would allow me to do what I love – and REALLY mean it. The combined efforts of our talent as photographers, plus the compassion of our clients, will help us all get one step ahead in the fight against breast cancer.

How has Breast Cancer (or any cancer) made an impact on your life?
Though I have been lucky to have never been directly impacted by breast cancer, I lost my grandfather, my “best buddy”, to lung cancer when I was a teenager. Six years ago, I was diagnosed with cervical cancer. After undergoing treatment and surgery myself, I understood more why cancer research and education is so important. I am grateful to be able to contribute to a cause that is there for anyone touched by breast cancer. There is comfort in knowledge, so I believe research is essential.

How many tattoos do you have?
I get this question probably more often than any question about my work or equipment! I’ve lost count. Really, I have.

I’ll be offering a Boudoir Marathon Day for the event! Mini-sessions will be scheduled at a new hotel suite in St. Augustine, and will include one hour of shooting time. Think ahead to the holidays… a gift for your man AND a way to give back!

Welcome Ben Lawson

BenLawsonImages for a Cure welcomes Springfield, MO photographer and general cool-guy, Ben Lawson! He says it best on his website, “eclectic mix of fashion photography styling and knack of capturing candid moments” – which pretty much sums up his super modern, vintage style of editing and special captured moments. I always love meeting photographers who just ooze passion and love for their art – and Ben is just that kind of photographer! It’s been a pleasure getting to know his work, and I hope you’ll take a minute and check him out. Send him some love on his Facebook Fan page and thank him for participating!

Why did you want to get involved with Images for a Cure?
I am always looking for ways to give to the community in some fashion. Giving of my talents is the most rewarding way I can accomplish this.

How has Breast Cancer (or any cancer) made an impact on your life?
My immediate family and I have been very fortunate, but I have had two grandparents die of cancer. With one grandfather in particular was difficult to experience his slow demise. No one should have to experience what he went through, and I daresay what the rest of the family endured as well.

If you’ve learned one thing in life you’d like to share, what would it be?
We only have one life to live, and the choices we make daily have a great impact on the quality of that life, for yourself and for others. When we have the opportunity, no matter how small, to make life better for someone it’s almost always the right choice to make.

Why did you want to get involved with Images for a Cure?
I saw a tweet for it from Scarlett Lillian and was immediately interested. My grandmother had breast cancer, so it is a cause I am close to. Each year my mom, aunt, and I participate a walk to raise funds for breast cancer research, and we have a great time together. I’ve been wanting to do some sort of charity work with my photography, and seeing the Images for a Cure project I was immediately sold!

How has Breast Cancer (or any cancer) made an impact on your life?
My grandmother had breast cancer, and so does my best friend’s mom. It’s so close to home for so many women and families. My grandmother was one of my best friends.

Tell us something interesting about your photography studio.

My logo is close to my heart as well! My colors (green and black) were my wedding colors, and my star logo is tattooed on my wrist! Can’t get any closer than that – AND the star is pink. Guess that wins me points with the Images for a Cure cause as well!

Details on her sessions:
My session fees are $250 for an engagement session, which will all be donated to the Images for a Cure project. Additionally, I am offering to credit those clients who participate the $250 towards a wedding package with me! I can be reached at: LeeannMariePhoto@gmail.com
